“Ray Kable Wins Ernie D’s 40 UMP Modified Feature”
“Andrew Saffelle Wins His First Ever Feature With Hobby Stocks”
By Brent Hottle
Winchester(VA)-This season is coming to a close with this weekend marking one of the last three events. This weekend would focus on the UMP modified division with the running of the Ernie D’s 40. The crate late model and hobby stock divisions would also be racing on this night.
Once the heat races were completed for all divisions, we would see a climb to the pole event for the modifieds. Ty Norder would climb to the top of this event and earn himself a pole starting position for the feature event. We would then pause for our weekly Invocation and playing of our National Anthem.
The first feature of the night would be the twenty lap RUSH crate late model race. Front row starters Joe Leavell and Davin Kaiser would battle for the lead during the first lap. Leavell would slip high. This would allow Kaiser to hold the lead on lap two over Travis Campbell and Devin Brannon. Josh Williams would spin in turn two to quickly bring out the caution. Braeson Fulton would spin during the next restart attempt. Once the field went back to green Kaiser would now lead lap three over Brannon and Campbell. Kaiser would quickly jump out to a three car length lead over Brannon by lap four. He would hold this lead over Brannon through the halfway point of the race. Brannon would now start to close in and pull alongside Kaiser for the lead as the pair completed the eleventh lap. Brannon would get a great run out of turn two and take the lead from Kaiser as they raced down the back straightaway. Brannon would go on to lead lap twelve. Brayden Armel would spin in turn four to bring out the caution on the fourteenth lap. Brannon would continue to show his strength after the restart and begin to pull away from Kaiser. Devin Brannon would go on to win the feature event. Davin Kaiser and Joe Leavell would round out the top three.
Next it was time for the Ernie D’s 40 UMP modified feature event. Outside pole sitter Michael Altobelli would lead lap one over Ty Norder and Ray Kable. This trio would race nose to tail for several laps. Norder would pull alongside Altobelli to challenge for the lead as they completed the seventh lap. Norder would take the lead as they raced out of turn two. Norder would now lead lap eight over Altobelli and Kable. Kable would quickly move around Altobelli for the second position on lap nine. He would then pull alongside Norder for the lead on lap ten. Kable would now pull out to the lead as they raced out of turn two and lead lap eleven over Norder and Altobelli. Haley Kaiser would slow to a stop at the top of turn two and bring out the caution on lap fourteen. Kable would lead lap fifteen over Altobelli who had moved around Norder for the second position. Kable would now begin to pull away from the field. He would hold a three quarter of a straight away lead over Altobelli by the half way point in the race. We would see the top two running two distinctly different lines around the speedway. Kable would run his car tight around the bottom groove as Altobelli was hammer down ripping the top side of the speedway. By lap twenty-six Kable would find himself navigating lap traffic. Haley Kaiser would stop on the
top side at the exit of turn four to bring out the caution on lap thirty. There would be no change in the top three after the restart. Cody Williams would challenge Norder for the third position on the thirty-second lap of the event. Norder would pull back ahead and hold the position by the end of the thirty-fourth lap. Joey Clower would spin on lap thirty-five to bring out the final caution of the event. Kable would continue to lead Altobelli after the restart, however, Norder would charge hard into turn one causing his car to slide high and allowing Cody Williams to slide past for the third position. Ray Kable would go on to win the feature event. Michael Altobelli and Cody Williams would round out the top three.
The final feature event of the night would be for the hobby stock division. Billy Sonner Jr would lead lap one over Justin Hottle and Cody Sumption. Sumption would look to the low side of Hottle and challenge him for the second position on lap two. Sumption would complete the pass and move into second position by the end of the third lap. James Stephens would spin in turn four to bring out the next caution. As the field went back to green heartbreak would ensue for Sumption as he pulled his machine out of line and shut off the engine with mechanical issues. Sonner would now lead lap four over Hottle and Andrew Saffelle. There would be no change in the top three for the next few laps. Stephens would spin in turn two to bring out the caution on lap nine. Saffelle would make good use of the next restart attempt and move around Hottle for the second position. He would now begin to search for a way around Sonner for the lead. The top two would race hard in turn two on lap twelve. Saffelle would move ahead of Sonner and lead lap thirteen. Andrew Saffelle would go on to win his first ever feature event. Billy Sonner Jr and Justin Hottle would round out the top three. We would see an emotional Andrew Saffelle climb to the roof of his car and send thanks to our LORD in victory lane before later thanking him during his interview. Andrew would go on to say it only took thirty years but I finally got a win!
We want to thank all of the teams and fans who supported this event. We look forward to seeing everyone back this Saturday night for our first round of Nationals. This weekend's Nationals events will be for the limited late model, hobby stock, and SCDRA divisions. Also our annual awards banquet will be held on January 17th. Tickets will be available at the speedway this weekend and next. Stay tuned for an event flyer for the banquet for more information.
