“Kyle Hardy Wins The Limited Late Model Feature”
“Devin Brannon Wins The RUSH Crate Late Model Feature”
By Brent Hottle
Winchester(VA)-The last Saturday in May would welcome another eventful night of racing at “The Action Track”. We would host the limited and RUSH crate late models along with the hobby stock, SCDRA, and Winchester vintage divisions. The SCDRA division would run two twin style features on this night, making it a six feature evening!
Timed hotlaps would determine the starting line ups for the limited, RUSH crate, and hobby stock divisions heat races. The timed hotlaps would also determine the starting line up of the first SCDRA feature. Once all of the qualifying races were completed, we would pause for our weekly invocation and playing of our National Anthem.
The first feature for the night would be for the SCDRA division. Allen Griffith would lead lap one over Devon Iser and Shawn Payne. Stephen Suite would make a pass around Payne to take over the third position by the end of the second lap. Griffith and Iser would begin to pull away from third place running Suite as the leaders completed the fourth lap. Heartbreak for the leaders would ensue on lap five as Iser would look to the low side of Griffith as the pair charged into turn one. Iser would get hard on the brakes and slide into the drivers side of Griffith causing them to both slide up the banking and come to a stop by the wall at the top of turn one, taking them both out of the race. On the restart Suite would now inherit the lead over Brody Tolstyka and Tyler Kline. Suite would begin to show his strength as he pulled away from the field. Kline would begin searching for the momentum to move around Tolstyka for the second position in the closing laps. As the pair would cross the finish line side by side for several laps in a row. Stephen Suite would go on to win his first feature in several years. Brody Tolystka and Tyler Kline would round out the top three.
Next up would be the limited late model division. Kyle Hardy would lead the field to the green from his pole starting position and lead lap one over James Lichliter and Michael Carter. Hardy would begin to pull away from Lichliter as Lichliter would start to also pull away from Carter. John Davidson would get sideways and bring out the first and only caution of the feature event on lap four. Hardy would continue to lead after the restart. Carter would capitalize on the restart and move ahead of Lichliter for the second position. Hardy would quickly show speed, as he would pull out to a three quarter of a straightaway lead by the end of the eight lap. Just as Carter completed the ninth lap, he would get a “push” and slide up the track in turn one. This would allow Lichliter to speed past and regain the second place running position. Lichliter would quickly pull away from Cater over the next few laps. Kyle Hardy would lead all twenty laps and take the feature win. James Lichliter and Michael Carter would round out the top three.
We would see the RUSH crate late models pull onto the speedway next. In just a very few starts behind the wheel of a late model, Chase Hardy would find himself on the pole for this feature
event after winning his first heat race earlier in the night. Outside pole sitter Tyler Hoy would get a great start and lead lap one over Chase Hardy and a side by side battling Kyle Hardy and Devin Brannon. Hoy would pull ahead of Hardy by about two car lengths, as Brannon took over the third position by the end of the second lap. Hoy would begin to stretch his lead to around 10 car lengths over the next several laps. Chase Hardy would find himself defending his second place running position, from a challenging Brannon on lap eight. Jim Pownall would spin in turn two and bring out the caution on lap nine. Hoy would continue to lead the field after the restart, as Brannon would now move into the second position and move Chase Hardy back to the third position. Brannon would look to the low side of Hoy as the pair raced out of turn two on the twelfth lap. They would complete the thirteenth lap side by side as they battled for the lead position. Brannon would lead the fourteenth lap by about four inches over Hoy. Kyle Hardy would move around his brother Chase on the fifteenth lap to take over the third position. Jim Pownall would spin at the bottom of turn two to bring out the second and final caution of the event. Brannon would quickly start to pull away from Hoy after the restart. Kyle Hardy would search high and low behind Hoy in hopes to find a line to pull ahead in the closing laps. Devin Brannon would go on to win the twenty lap feature event. Tyler Hoy and Kyle Hardy would round out the top three.
The hobby stock division would pull onto the speedway to do battle next. Third place starting Justin Hatcher would spin in turn one after the initial start to bring out the caution. After the complete restart of the race, Billy Sonner Jr would lead lap one over Sam Hoffman and Jason Wilkins. Hoffman would spin in turn four to bring out the caution before the second lap could be completed. Sonner would continue to hold the lead after the restart over Jason Wilkins and Justin Hottle. The race would go caution free during the remaining fourteen laps. Billy Sonner Jr would win the event. Jason Wilkins and Justin Hottle would round out the top three.
It would now be time for the Winchester vintage division to take the center stage. Johnny Oliver would lead lap one over Chris Bohrer and Larry Miller. Tony Catlett would begin to challenge Miller for the third position and take it away by the end of the fifth lap. JT Bowie would hit the front straight away wall hard as he raced out of turn four to bring out the caution on the sixth lap. After the restart Oliver would still lead Bohrer, as Catlet would now find himself holding off a challenging Gerald Shannon for the third position. Oliver would begin to pull away from the field as we would watch a three car battle for the second, third and fourth positions by Bohrer, Catlett and Shannon for several laps. Shannon would move into the second position ahead of Bohrer by the end of the thirteenth lap. Catlett would move around Bohrer and take over the third position by the end of the fourteenth lap. Johnny Oliver would finish the race with a full straight away lead and take the feature win. Gerald Shannon and Tony Catlett would round out the top three.
The final feature of the night would be the second twin feature for the SCDRA division. With the number 8 inversion being drawn after the first feature Allen Griffith would find himself once again in the pole starting position. Griffith would lead lap one over Shawn Payne and Lonnie Hobday. Griffith would pull out to a three car lead over Payne, as Devon Iser would now move into the third position by the end of the second lap. Iser would move around Payne to take over the
second position and set his sights on the leader by the end of the fifth lap. Iser would quickly chase Griffith down and erase his four car length lead during the next lap. Iser would now stay glued to the rear bumper of Griffith for the next several laps. Iser would move around Griffith and take the lead by the end of the tenth lap. Devon Iser would go on to win the feature event. Allen Griffith and Steven Suite would round out the top three.
We want to thank everyone for coming out to this weekend's events. We look forward to seeing everyone back next Saturday night as the Modified Mafia makes their return to the speedway. I also want to thank all of our great parents for their help in keeping the children back and safe during the victory lane interviews. The children did a great job waiting until it was their turn to get in the pictures and meet the drivers for autographs.
