"DeHaven Pads Point Lead With Saturday Winchester Triumph"
"Gwizdale Claims 1st Annual Hunter Crane Memorial"
By Doug Watson
Winchester, VA- Current Winchester speedway points leader Jonathon DeHaven raced to his fourth feature win of the season in last Saturday nights 20-lap Limited late Model headliner. The win for DeHaven was his 7th overall in 2013 as he's also collected 3 Crate Late Models wins between Winchester and Potomac (MD) speedway's.
DeHaven and Walter Crouch made up the front-row for the start of the event, with DeHaven quickly jumping into the race lead as the field roared into turn one. As DeHaven lead, 3rd starting Robbie Emory made his way to 2nd by the 4th lap, and set his sights on DeHaven. Emory would get close to DeHaven on more than one occasion, but was unable to make the pass and would settle for runner-up money, as Dehaven would lead all 20-circuits to post the win. "Starting spot means an awful lot here." DeHaven stated during his post-race interview. "We drew a good number tonight, and with as good as the track was, we were able to get out front quick and get the win." With just 42-points separating DeHaven from defending track champion Brad Ritter, with one point race remaining, DeHaven isn't ready to hoist the trophy just yet. "The guys back at the shop keep talking about the championship." Said DeHaven. "We'd like to win this thing but we still have one point race left and we know how good Brad (Ritter) is so we'll see what happens here the next race." Crouch settled for third, Brad Ritter was fourth with Travis Stickley rounding out the top-five. Heats went Crouch and Bubby Tharp Jr.
Richard Gwizdale became the sixth-different winner of the season with his first of 2013 in the 1st annual Hunter Crane Memorial 25-lap event for the Four-Cylinders. Gwizdale shot from his pole starting spot to lead all 25-circuits, but it was no easy trip to victory lane. As Gwizdale lead, Vance Williams and defending track champion Tommy Whitt gave Gwizdale all he could handle during the event, but Gwizdale was able to hold them off to score the emotional win. "It's an honor to win this race for the Crane Family." Gwizdale stated. "It's kind of a bitter-sweet win, but my heart goes out to the Crane family and I'm proud to be the very first winner of this event." Williams and Whitt settled for second and third with Gary Newell fourth and Roger Whitlock completing the top-five. Heats went to Gwizdale and Ed Gageby.
Mike Corbin continued his domination of the Pure Stock ranks as he drove to his 8th feature win of the season in the divisions 15-lap feature. Corbin wrestled the race lead from point leader David Kaiser on lap-3 and would run-off and hide, as he would take the checker by a large margin, in the non-stop event. Kaiser held on for second, Buddy Wilson was third, Keith Koontz took fourth with Brian Luttrell filling the front five. Heats went Kaiser and Koontz.
Michael Pfaff became the 8th different winner of the season with his first-career feature win in the nightcap 15-lap U-Car main. Defending track champion Kevin Oates lead the first 9-laps before Pfaff took over for good on lap-10. Pfaff would then lead the final 5-laps of the non-stop event, unchallenged, to score the break-through win. Oates would settle for second, Mark Pollard was third, point leader Brenda Alexander was fourth with Larry Lamb completing the top-five. With his second place finish, Kevin Oates was declared champion, of the "Virginia Heritage U-Car mini-series". Heats went to Pfaff and Kevin Pollard.
